The Patient's Perspective: Best Practices for Translating ICFs and PILs
Course summary
Description ICFs (Informed Consent Forms) and PILs (Patient Information Leaflets) make up a good portion of most medical translators' workload and is a common point of entry into the field of medical translation for those not specialising in medical translation. While seemingly simple, these documents are rife with challenges and also contain a surprising amount of medical terminology. In this webinar, we will look at best practices for translating ICFs and PILs by adopting the patient's perspective. Learn the language of regulatory and legal requirements and clauses. Understand why your audience matters and make sure your client understands this as well. We will also more closely examine patient readability scores, cultural/linguistic gaps, how to avoid problems during back-translation, and other checks and balances to ensure quality and consistent translations. Target audience Translators already specialising in medical translation. Translators considering crossing over into medical translation. Interpreters who frequently interact with patients. Learning objectives At the end of this session, participants will be able: To identify the patient audience and appropriately tailor medical terminology. To understand essential regulatory and legal requirements for compliance. To recognise potential gaps in linguistic/cultural equivalence. To adopt specific strategies to manage the readability and avoid non-correspondence during back-translation. Prerequisites No prerequisites.
