What's the best cloud based CAT tool for freelance translators Thread poster: localoca

Is there a cloud-based tool out there that is cost effective and you can use instead of memoQ / Trados like softwares that are very "heavy" and expensive? I've looked at a few cloud-based tools out there (Crowdin, Transifex, onesky app), but they seem to be catered towards the receiving end, i.e. companies needing translations versus the freelancers doing the translations.

* Can't pay to remove restrictions
* Browser-based editor only
Memsource Cloud
* Free option
* 10 MB size limit
* 2 files file limit
* Can pay EUR 20 per month to remove limit
* Browser-based editor as well as installed editor
I know of no others.

This is my third attempt to post a response to this query.
Basically anything "cloud" to me means "here be dragons" and I avoid it like the plague. I use Wordfast classic and it does everything I want it to; it is also easy to use and reasonably priced. Why take the risk of cloud-based "solutions"?

Yes, it's cheaper than MemSource Cloud, in the long run (EUR 13 per month). But the original poster may have legitimate reasons for wanting a cloud solution. Don't forget, e-mail has been a cloud application since, well, forever... and we all use it.

I was wondering: When can a CAT tool be called 'cloud-based'? Must it have a browser interface or is it sufficient if one can save his project files and resources (TM, terms) in the cloud? (Which is possible with many CAT tools.)

The 2 MB limit is for the size of a translatable file (eg. DOCX, PPTX, IDML etc.) to be uploaded. Say you have a large PowerPoint presentation with lots of pictures and its size exceeds the 2 MB limit: you can open it in Wordfast Pro (demo version sufficient) and you will obtain a much smaller TXML (the internal format of Wordfast Pro 3 & Anywhere is TXML, not XLIFF*). Chances is it won't exceed 2 MB, so you can upload that to Wordfast Anywhere and translate it there. Once it's translated, you can download it and use it in Wordfast Pro to generate the translated PowerPoint. That would be a good workaround for the file size limitation.

There are no "projects" in Wordfast Anywhere. The 10 file limit just means you cannot have more than 10 translatable files at a time in your account. If you have a project that consists of 150 tiny text files, you won't be able to upload all of them at the same time.
*) The internal format of Wordfast Pro 4 (Cocoa version available for Mac!) is TXLF.

If I understand correctly, the limit applies to the upload, so you can also zip up the file and upload it then... then the "upload" may be under the 2 MB limit even though the unzipped file is larger.

... but many file formats (eg. DOCX, PPTX etc.) are already compressed, so may shrink very little when being zipped.
