It depends Jan 28, 2016

The link is https://www.memsource.com/en/pricing#translators.
But sometimes agencies provide freelance translators with Memsource during projects.

this is not an answer of my question.

You just show me what you get as certain person (pricing)...

I still wonder if the software is partly an open source software/ if the kernel is open source...

I don't think so Jan 28, 2016

And its XLF format has incompatibilities that make CAT hopping difficult.

Been there, tried that.

Another question Jan 28, 2016

There was no question about compatibility with other CAT tools or any formats. And I related to agencies working with Memsource, so there is no "hopping".

can't see that they are offering access to the source code Jan 28, 2016

anywhere on their site, so no, it's not an "open source" tool.

You fancy tinkering with the source code?

None of us knows the answer to your question Jan 28, 2016

elmnas asked:
Is Memsource open source?

We don't know. But if a tool or its developer doesn't say by it/him/herself that it is open source, then it generally isn't. Write to the developer and asked him, then tell us his answer.

Sorry, elmas, I did not see your second post. But I think the link was quite explaining, like Samuel explained. @Stepan: Of course I know the difference.
Mostly such questions are about free software (=without payment), so I assumed it was the same here.
Maybe this links

Maybe this links help you more: http://wiki.memsource.com/wiki/Memsource_API and: http://support.memsource.com/topic/what-is-the-developer-edition-and-how-to-set-it-up if you want to integrate it somewhere.

‘Without payment’ is commonly referred to as freeware. Free software is not freeware! As for Memsource, it is definitely not free software, because it is SaaSS.

BTW (for memoQ users) Jan 29, 2016

To mitigate the XLF incompatibility (that mainly means {tags} rendered as plain text), I use memoQ Regex Tagger.
Just add {(.*?)} to Rules as an empty tag and save it for future use.
This turns plain text tags into visible and non-editable tags.

Not an SaaSS, I think Jan 29, 2016

Well, firstly, the original poster did not ask if MemSource was "free software" but whether it was "open source". Yes, I know, these two terms are often used interchangeably (in the same way that "open source" is sometimes used when the poster would have been happy with "freeware"), but since we're splitting hairs, I might as well point this out.

Secondly, the fact that the MemSource team does not make their software's source freely available does not mean that it is not "free software". The GPL, for example, does not require one to distribute the free software... only that one must distribute it in a certain way if one decides to distribute it.

The GNU article about of "SaaSS" (Service as a Software Substitute) is interesting, but it's highly philosophical. The fact that you (as a user) have no idea how a web-based service converts a file from one format to another, does not make it any less free, since you probably don't know how the program on your own computer does the conversion either (even if it is an open source program)... unless you're not only a user but also a programmer.
