Convert .xlf to .docx (or .xlsx, .pptx, .pdf, etc)

I work with a client that sends me .xlf files to translate. I like to proofread at least once in MS Word before sending a translation off - but this isn't possible with xlf. Does anyone know how to convert an xlf to a docx for this purpose?

This is certainly one option, thanks. Is there a way of doing this that doesn't result in a Word file full of markup language?

I have memoQ and Trados 2015. These documents were translated in memoQ.

Export to Bilingual RTF and proofread in Word.
Then, update the project by importing these RTFs back to memoQ.

No markup Feb 27, 2017

Thanks again for your suggestion. I'm rather hoping to be able to read a clean document: no markup, all images and formatting present, etc. Perhaps there's an external tool capable of this? I did see that Trados has a feature for Trados-format xliff (http://producthelp.sdl.com/kb/Articles/3448.html).
