English term or phrase: Grand Master
I've researched this and will show you what I found. I am trying to have a plaque made that says "Grand Master" in Korean for my Hapkido instructor. What I have is: 그랜드 마스터 which supposedly translates into geu-raen-deu ma-seu-teo (English transliteration?). I also have 총 콴 장 님 which is chong kwan jang nim (the Korean term for "Grand Master"). I thought this was what I needed, except a Babel Fish translation of this term comes back as "Gun khwan market" Help! :)

관장님 or 사범님
Explanation:
Hi Michael,

in order for me to appropriately term a Hapkido instructor I had to read your description of the situation first. The source term - grand master - has different taget terms depending on the situation in Korean: If the person as a Hapkido instructor is actually & physically teaching you and other people, then he should be called as "사범님"in this case the "grand" of grand master will be translated as "님" and the master as "사범". But if the person as a Hapkido instructor does not actually teach you and other people, but only represents the Hapkido institute and has one or a couple of instructors who physically insturct trainees, then he should be termed as "관장님".

Hope this helps you.

Kind regards,

Chae-Hong Park

grand master
총관장

Explanation:
Babel Fish gets confused easily. 총관장 (chonggwanjang) is the hapkido term usually translated as "grand master." Note the middle syllable (관 not 콴).

The honorific 님 may or may not be appropriate for a plaque; I think it is appropriate use the honorific if the plaque is addressed to him (a "thank you" message of some sort), but not if it is simply identifying his title.*

*Of course, I am not a native speaker, so I cannot speak with confidence on such matters.

grand master
대사범 (please see a note below mentioned)

Explanation:
If you are just an instructor of Tae Kwon Do 도장, you don`t have to put a plaque as 총관장, because 총관장 is the highest master of master through various tests. If you see this site you can find 대사범 as a Grand Master (그랜드 마스터):

http://www.aladdin.co.kr/shop/wproduct.aspx?partner=compare&...

As Mr. Samuel said, until 총관장 position you need pass the following position and usual 도복 (uniform)?
Instructor ; 조교 & his 도복 is blue,
Assistent Master ; 보조사범 & uses red 도복,
Master ; 정사범 & uses black 도복,
Head Mster ; 수석사범 & uses black 도복 with red marking and responsible for 3 or 4 TKD clubs,
Area Master ; 지역사범 & uses black 도복 with red marking and star on his shoulder, and is responsible all clubs of a certain state, he is treated as 관장,
Grand Master ; 대사범 when he/she didn't passed through the official test in Korea or 총관장 that has an official ID received through the test in Korea
