More options. Either "steadily" (adj) or "is steady in" could be the original of "De esta manera, mantiene la persistencia" He/she steadily deals (or is steady in dealing) with obstacles and contingencies that may arise..."

Sounds like a positive quality, but then again, so does Álvaro's option.

If, as you say, it's repeated umpteen times, better to have a one-word option for consistency, but you might perhaps want to avoid such repetition.
In texts like these I usually go with the same term.

s/he persists / s/he is persistent

Explanation:
Hi ME,

Don't see anything worng with using persist here. Though it's often used negatively, it's often considered a quality that helps drives people to success.

What I don't see is any added value in "mantiene" as it's an implicit property of persistence and wouldn't contribute much to the English translation.

Good luck,

Álvaro

Alternatively "s/he is resolute" or "determined", but still don't see a problem with persist.

I'd be interested to know myself what the 'true natives' think about this one.

Some examples of positive usage in the Encyclopaedia Britannica:

On William Faulkner:
"[...] unmatched for his extraordinary structural and stylistic resourcefulness, for the range and depth of his characterization and social notation, and for his persistence and success in exploring fundamental human issues in intensely localized terms."

On George Washington:
"His persistence and devotion to his men and his perpetual mindfulness of the ideals for which they were fighting won him the respect and loyalty of many."

On Edmund Halley:
"His wise assessment of Newton's work and his persistence in guiding it to completion earned for him an important place in the emergence of Western thought."

On Moliére:
"The history of this great play sheds much light on the conditions in which Molière had to work and bears a quite remarkable testimony to his persistence [...] "

neutral  Yvonne Gallagher: "persistent/persists " has slight negative undertones for me

-> Hi gallagy. That was the reason I was a bit hesitant, but I've added some instances of 'positive persistence' from the Encyclopaedia Britannica. I'd appreciate your thoughts. :O) :O)

agree  Ruth Ramsey: I wouldn't say that "persistent" is negative. I think it's a positive attribute.
