"The Libyan crisis has shown the value of having aircraft carriers with fast jets stationed off crisis zones. I appeal to David Cameron to see sense and **reprieve** both the carrier HMS Ark Royal, and at least a minimum number of Harriers. During the Falklands crisis Mrs Thatcher successfully **reprieved** the Ark’s sister ship, HMS Invincible. We must do the same for the Ark Royal."
Não estou a entender o significado de "reprieve" neste contexto. Será "retirada"?
Explanation: "cancel or postpone the punishment of (someone, especially someone condemned to death".
As the ships mentioned have been decommissioned and are to be dismantled, I think that "reprieve" here means to save the ships from that fate/postpone their decommission and use them in this conflict as this sort of ship is needed for the Libyan conflict.
I'm not a native Portuguese speaker so am not sure if "manter em actividade" is the best way to express this, but am sure I have now understood the meaning of the EN text.

It definitely means this "a temporary escape from an undesirable fate or unpleasant situation"/"abandon or postpone plans to close or put an end to (something)". It makes sense to me now given the fact that the ship has been decommissioned. The idea is to save the ship and postpone its dismantlement so that it can be used in this conflict.
This seems to make sense to me, given what I just said: "pergunto-me se este "reprieve" não quererá dizer manter o porta-aviões em actividade durante mais algum tempo"
I'm not sure if I've understood the text properly. The first sentence doesn't really seem to make sense in the overall context if the word "reprieve" is taken to mean "discharge" or "remove".... It seems to be inferring that aircraft carriers with fast jets SHOULD be stationed off Libya (and that the "HMS Ark Royal" is one of these ships) but that currently there aren't any there and so the appeal is being made for Cameron to station the "HMS Ark Royal" off the Libyan coast... Perhaps the rest of the text could clarify if this is the correct interpretation...? It is rather confusing because if the meaning of "reprieve" here is to "remove" then there is some sort of mistake because: the Libyan crisis is currently ongoing and as such the ship being referred to must be the "HMS Ark Royal (R07)" which, according to wikipedia, was decommissioned in March this year and is "awaiting disposal". So it isn't currently involved in the Libya conflict and couldn't be stationed as it is no longer in use... The HMS invincible was also sold earlier this year....

...in this context, and that it should be "remove" - I base my conviction on the fact that the English is somewhat odd...I've never heard the expression "to see sense," for example.

... surgiu-me outra hipótese. Em 2009, Gordon Brown anunciou que seria necessário sacrificar um dos dois porta-aviões britânicos para reduzir o orçamento da defesa em cerca de 8,2 mil milhões de libras. Assim, pergunto-me se este "reprieve" não quererá dizer manter o porta-aviões em actividade durante mais algum tempo...
num dos casos mencionados (o da guerra nas Malvinas) o Invincible foi bombardeado por se ter aproximado demasiadamente das costas da Argentina. Daí a minha sugestão...
acho eh essa mesma a interpretacao e unica..os porta avioes estao ao largo de zonas de crise, mesmo as vezes quando nao ha guerra declarada, por varios motivos/pontos estrategicos, etc. A enfase aqui eh se os porta avioes devem ou nao permanecer ao largo de zonas de crise ou conflituosas...pois muitas vezes o proprio pais em conflito nao quer, e ou podem estar a violar alguma lei, e ou os que mandam os portaavioes podem decidir abandonar a regiao.
os porta avioes ficam sempre ao largo da zona de crise...acho eu, para apoiar os ataques e voos aereos. Alias qual seria a ideia de dizer que a crise na Libia tem mostrado a importancia de ter porta avioes estacionados ....em zonas de crise (aqui entendo que querem dizer que esta CRISE NA LIBIA, tem mostrado como eh importante ter se portaavioes ao largo de zonas/regioes em crise (outras zonas quaisquer, uma delas por exemplo eh referida logo a seguir, as Falklands.) Desculpem estou sem acentos.
Há aqui muitas formas de interpretar estas afirmações, daí a dificuldade. Esta questão de manter os porta-aviões "ao largo das zonas de crise" também pode ser para que estejam de prontidão para intervir em caso de necessidade. Aí, seria lógico manter a sua presença. Como as sugestões têm sido tão díspares, vou aguardar para ouvir mais umas opiniões. Entretanto, obrigada a todos os que estão a participar.
este "off" não é perto mas fora (ou ao largo) das zonas de crise. Creio que para evitar que sejam alvo de acções terroristas ou outros tipos de ataques...

Tenho estado a procurar o que a Mrs. Thatcher fez relativamente ao HMS Invincible nas Malvinas, mas também ainda não cheguei a nenhuma conclusão. Prolongou ou suspendeu a missão do porta-aviões?
