Hors d'oeuvres).

'Nibbles' are a little bit naff and remind me of suburban mummies sipping white wine, and don't evoke herrings and gherkins at all.

Here is a good discussion, and I generally agree with all that's said there:

....so, I am not really asking for a translation as such but so called creative input here.... My best bet so far is to play on the idea of 'amuse-bouche' and call it something like 'herring 'Amuse me while I wait for my vodka' or something slightly more tempered along these lines.... but any suggestions very welcome.

Notes to answerer

mezze/appetizer/dish served to accompany alcoholic drinks

Explanation:
Meze or mezze (/ˈmɛzeɪ/) is a selection of small dishes served to accompany alcoholic drinks as a course or as appetizers before the main dish in the Near East and the Balkans. In Levantine, Caucasian and Balkan cuisines meze is served at the beginning of all large-scale meals.

W skład greckich mezedes najczęściej wchodzą: plaster sera feta i nieco oliwek, polane oliwą z oliwek i przyprawione, np. posypane oregano), podane z pieczywem.

Nibbles' are a little bit naff and remind me of suburban mummies sipping white wine, and don't evoke herrings and gherkins at all.

Explanation:
druga propozycja - jako oddanie pozycji w menu - o polskiej nazwie "zagrycha";

zdaję sobie sprawę z nikłego zainteresowania Lady Asker tą moją propozycją; pomysł czerpię z tradycyjnego na całym świecie oferowania, zwłaszcza w ekskluzywnych restauracjach (od pewnego czasu - o zgrozo - nie tylko - ekskluzywnych), potraw o nazwach francuskich (lub - źródłowo czerpiących z j. francuskiego), albowiem - francuski to - lingua franca ;) - kuchni światowej;
