There is a potential ambiguity here, although I think it is just sloppy EN in fact!

Strictly speaking, "who are not typically academically inclined" tends to imply "who are not inclined towards typical academic learning methods" — BUT I don't believe this is really what the author intended!
I suspect what they really meant to write was "who are typically not academically inclined" — the position of the word 'typically' makes a crucial difference in the meaning, which I think it is important to just be aware of, even though, as I have said, I feel sure the latter is the intended meaning.
