Spanish term or phrase: de la pobreza del señalamiento público
Contexto (the protagonist has been wrongfully imprisoned):

Vivir en las sombras nunca fue tan difícil para Eva como tener que soportar que su dignidad se cuestionara. Sin embargo, si ya había sufrido el horror de la enfermedad de un hijo, de la pobreza del señalamiento público, creía que había llegado el momento de librarse de ese pasado terrible.

and being shamed publicly
Explanation:
I reckon this wording would work, considering the surrounding context.

A “to boot” might spice it up a bit… ;)

“Sin embargo, si ya había sufrido el horror de la enfermedad de un hijo, de la pobreza del señalamiento público, creía que había llegado el momento de librarse de ese pasado terrible.”

“That said, she had already endured the horrors of her child’s illness, and being shamed publicly to boot, so felt it was high time to put this terrible past behind her.”

*** "publicly shamed" might work better than "shamed publicly"; flows and feels better somehow.

the ignobility of public stigma

Explanation:
I think this is what it means, i.e. the meanness or wretchedness of being the object of public scorn, contempt or mockery.

agree  neilmac: @Mu I really like "ignominy" for this too...

-> Thanks, Neil. Doesn't "ignominy" mean "public shame or disgrace"? My understanding is that "pobreza" here refers to meanness or spite.

agree  AllegroTrans: cannot see asker's difficulty with this; dictionary + maybe Thesaurus should sort out phrases like this

-> Thanks, AllegroTrans. I think the difficulty may be with the word "señalamiento" used in this sense. The dictionaries don't make it very clear that it can be used with this meaning, though perhaps the context would steer you in that direction.

agree  Muriel Vasconcellos: I would say 'ignominy'. Not a tautology at all.

-> Thanks, Muriel, but wouldn't that be a tautology?

agree  Yvonne Gallagher: ignominy ...really don't like "ignobility"

-> Thanks, Gallagy. Hmmm... see response to Muriel.

neutral  James A. Walsh: I rarely do this, but I think this is way too flowery. Sorry.

-> Thanks, James. I actually agree with you to an extent. I made the entry to explain what I believe it means. I think the register is up to the translator. I'm the first to admit literary translation isn't my area.
