Spanish term or phrase: Todos piensan que lo tengo en un banco.
Hello,

I'm subtitling a documentary about a man who keeps a valuable work of art in his studio
and I've come unstuck with the following play on words:

"La gente me pregunta dónde tengo el cuadro y yo siempre respondo que en un lugar seguro. Claro, todos piensan que lo tengo en un banco. Pues a lo mejor tienen razón, en mi estudio tengo un banco bastante largo, en el que caben muchos cuadros por encima."

The problem here is how to get around the reference to "banco" (as in bank) and then "banco" (as in bench). The bench appears on screen, so I'm not sure how to approach it. I have a feeling I'll have to rephrase the first part about keeping it in a bank...

Any input would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Everyone thinks its sitting in a bank...
Explanation:
You can use the word "sitting" twice and say something like "it's sitting on a pretty long bench in my studio".

I don't think you can just remove chunks from a subtitle and expect people not to notice, but let's all agree with Phil...

Explanation:
If you want to keep the play on words here,
then I'd suggest that you keep "bank" in the first part
and use "bank of ideas" for the second part of the clause.

You'd have to change the rest of the sentence to make it work, though.

I hope you like this idea. I'll see if I can come up with a better idea later.

Everybody thinks it is inside a safe, and it is actually safe in my study.

Explanation:
Otra posible solución, si no entorpece el resto del texto: cambiar la referencia al banco por una referencia a una caja fuerte.

¡Suerte! ¡Es todo un reto! :-)

agree  philgoddard: I'd leave out "Pues a lo mejor tienen razón", because this wouldn't make sense in the context, and "pretty long" as it distracts from the wordplay. So maybe: "Everyone thinks it's sitting in a bank, but it's actually sitting on a bench in my studio."
