English term or phrase: from which it was in the act of emerging

"Skill and cunning are necessary because, in dealing with fungi, particularly boletus, you are entering a world in which, having penetrated it, you begin to realize that you are dealing with growths that give every indication of being motivated by some supernatural power. It is said, for example, that if you succeeded in finding a boletus, and then fail to gather it – it should be cut, not wrenched out by the roots – it will disappear back into the earth from which it was in the act of emerging"

Comment comprenez-vous ce "from which it was in the act of emerging" ?

Merci à tous

dont il était en train d'émerger
Explanation:

agree  Tony M: That literally answers Asker's question « comment comprenez-vous... ? » — all that remains is to formulate it perhaps more idiomatically in FR.

agree  GILOU: oui, faut éviter le littéral. On dit qu'un champignon sort de terre....

  -> merci Gilou

neutral  Tony M: But 'was in the act of' doesn't mean 'commençait' — it has the sense of 'était en train de...'; you wouldn't pick a cèpe just as it was beginning to emerge!
