As happened to me a few years back, I went into a 'Spanish' food shop in Vienna and asked for 'alcachofas rebozadas' - upon which the manageress called out to the manager: 'Do we want to buy wholesale battered artichokes?'.

PS I used to work in the hotel & (non-self) catering (not gastronomy) business in Southern England and on the Costa Brava (with patatas bravas served up mealtimes).

As my Irish office manager from Dublin used to quip: 'I want to order plenty of salads with pot-tatto, tomatto and bannana on Fuerteventura.'
