Napawanie laserowe to proces polegający na stapianiu materiału w postaci proszku lub drutu energią promieniowania laserowego w osłonie gazu z równoczesnym nadtapianiem podłoża. Oba materiały stopione razem powodują powstanie napoiny. Lasery są źródłem energii o bardzo dużej gęstości mocy, co umożliwia bardzo dokładne nagrzewanie i topienie, jak również odparowywanie wszystkich znanych materiałów konstrukcyjnych.

Laser Metal Deposition. Laser metal deposition (LMD) is an additive manufacturing process in which a laser beam forms a melt pool on a metallic substrate, into which powder is fed. The powder melts to form a deposit that is fusion-bonded to the substrate.

Napawanie laserowe to generatywny proces produkcji elementów metalowych. Międzynarodowa nazwa to „Laser Metal Deposition”, w skrócie LMD. Mówi się też o „Direct Metal Deposition” (DMD) lub „Direct Energy Deposition” (DED). Proces można bardzo łatwo objaśnić. Na powierzchni laser wytwarza jeziorko ciekłego metalu. Proszek metalu jest automatycznie nakładany za pośrednictwem dyszy. Powstają zespawane ze sobą ściegi, struktury na istniejących korpusach lub całe elementy. Ten proces ma zastosowanie w branży lotniczo-kosmicznej, energetycznej, petrochemicznej, samochodowej oraz medycznej.
