Spanish term or phrase: cronificar la enfermedad
I'm translating an article about skin cancer and I'm unsure how to translate "cronificar" as I can't see how making something chronic would be a treatment. I'm assuming it's the idea of delay onset. The complete sentence is "El objetivo del tratamiento debe ser el de cronificar la enfermedad todo el tiempo que sea posible"

English translation:turning cancer into chronic disease
Explanation:
I.e.

turning cancer into chronic disease
(...)
For cancers for which appropriate treatment options are available, the proposed cancer to chronic disease (C2c) approach (Figure 1) requires two key components: first, knowledge of the precise localization and quantification of the cancer burden anywhere in the body, which can be achieved by non-invasive whole-body imaging [2,3]; and second, knowledge of the precise molecular signature of the evolving cancer burden to reiteratively tailor treatments predicted to be most effective in combating the establishment of resistance and subsequent relapse.

Cronificar el cáncer es sin duda el objetivo que debe presidir nuestro horizonte. Aunque todavía las cifras están lejos de este objetivo, sobre todo en algunos tumores, los avances en los tratamientos oncológicos de la última década han permitido que cada vez haya un número mayor de pacientes que han superado la enfermedad y viven tras un periodo de tratamiento médico.
En España podemos hablar de la cifra de 1.500.000 supervivientes.

agree  Justin Bearden: The idea here is talking about reducing the severity of the disease from "acute" to "chronic", the idea being to prolong life, presumably.

-> Thanks Justin. And yes, although there is more to it than just prolonging life. Turning cancer into chronic disease also conveys a particular understanding of therapy and personalized treatment.

chronotherapeutically treat(ing) the disease

Explanation:
...'debe ser el de cronificar la enfermedad ' - must be that of chrono-therapeutically treating / dealing with/ the disease (to avoid a split infinitive: to chrono-therapeutically treat).

It's disappointing that the verb is not even in Diccionario Mosby de Medicina ESP/ENG/ESP, though chronotherapeutics is.

I surmise that the chronic element refers to the paradox of 'chronically reversing or weakening' by treating the illness/ disease at regular, 'circadian' intervals.

PS I wasn't going to take a (blunt) stab at an answer at this question until I saw the asker's name.

Example sentence(s):
  • Chronotherapy, also called chronotherapeutics[1] or chronotherapeutic drug delivery,[2] refers to the use of circadian or other rhythmic cycles of a condition's symptoms and/or of the individual being treated in the application of therapy.
  • Chronotherapeutic diseases include asthma, cardiovascular diseases, glaucoma , rheumatoid arthritis and cancers,

chronification of disease

Explanation:
As to what the phrase means, cronificar la enfermedad refers to the following: "En este estadio la paciente se enfrenta a una enfermedad sin posibilidad de curación y se persigue paliar los síntomas, controlar la patología y dar una calidad de vida..." (https://www.elcorreo.com/bizkaia/sociedad/salud/investigacio...

As to the translation, I propose chronification of disease. The NHI has an article about cancer therapy that says: "While we argue elsewhere that chronification of the malignancy can be a valid approach in..." and, later on in the same article: "On the other end of the spectrum is the adaptive therapy approach, which postulates a chronification of the disease, while we favor this approach in general, it is not feasible when treating pediatric cancers." (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4530549/).
The American Journal of Managed Care has an article titled "Addressing the Chronification of Disease" (https://www.ajmc.com/journals/issue/2017/2017-vol23-n2/addre...
