agree  Ana Vanoli
6 mins
  -> ¡Gracias, Ana! (¡Tantísimo tiempo!).

agree  Cecilia Gowar: vía pública 1. f. Calle, plaza, camino u otro sitio por donde transita o circula el público.
13 mins
  -> ¡Gracias, Cecilia!

neutral  Neil Ashby: "public highway" is the legal defintion and includes "street, sidewalk, a park, plaza, market, etc." ;@) / In that case, thinking about it, doesn't "public spaces" overlap with bascially everything?
2 hrs
  -> Agreed, Neil, but the options in the source text above also include "carretera", so I thought I should avoid a potential overlap.

  -> Thank you, Phil!

agree  Andrea Sacchi
4 hrs
  -> ¡Gracias, Andrea!

"thoroughfare" is another one used in the UK,
"road", etc....

It is worth noting that a "public highway" covers all the areas mentioned by Daniel, squares, alleyways, footpaths, etc.:

Highway or Public Highway means any carriageway, lane, bridle path, footway, footpath, cycle track, walkway, bridge, square, court, alley, passage subway or other area which is a ‘highway maintainable at public expense’ in accordance with the Highways Act 1980 (or any subsequent enactment) and includes the whole extent of the Public Highway and the carriageways.

agree  Robert Carter: "Public spaces" is too broad IMO, as it would presumably include beaches too, and even public libraries, which I don't think you could refer to as a "vía" in Spanish.
10 hrs
  -> Thanks Robert

agree  Chema Nieto Castañón: En castellano highway resuena automáticamente a "autopista", lo que hace que naturalmente rechacemos esta opción, pero realmente parece el equivalente más ajustado para vía pública // I suspected it but I wasn't 100% sure ¡Gracias por la confirmación!

  -> Hi Chema, thanks, it's a legal term, and in English it also covers parks, squares, alleyways, etc. - it is any public area under the local council's responsibility.
