hi, the full sentence is 'Rilasciato ai fini dell'acquisizione d'ufficio' - it is written at the bottom of a residency certificate, referring to the reason why the certificate was issued, but I am struggling with 'acquisizione d'ufficio'!

Simple but hard to explain.

The most important fact is that the phrase is not talking (categorically!) about the acqusition of a residency status. Not at all. It is talking about the reason for issuing a residency certificate.

And the reason given refers to the fact (again, categorically) that the certificate is given not upon request of the residency holder, but mandatorily, that is, as a matter of duty of the issuer to some requesting authority (usually the offices of the court/judge).

To put it simply, someone (a judge?) must've requested that certificate peremptorily.

I'll give you an example. In Italy, if you want to start a civic case against someone, you must instigate it yourself. However, if a crime has been committed against you, the moment it is reported, the investigation becomes mandatory (or d'ufficio): whether you want to proceed against the perpetrator or not, the judge orders the investigation "d'ufficio".

The same here: the issuer specifies that the residency certificate is issued not upon the request of the resident (la richiesta dell'interessato), but mandatorily. I repeat, usually it's the office of the judge that's involved.
