Yabancı literatürde “outbreak” (daha lokalize bir bölgede gelişen salgın), “epidemic” (daha geniş bölgeler veya ülke çapında gelişen salgın) veya “pandemic” (birden çok ülke ve/veya kıtaları içeren salgın) olarak incelenebilir. Ancak genellikle “outbreak” ve “epidemic” aynı anlamda kullanılır.
Türk Dil Kurumu sözlüğünde salgın ve epidemi eş anlamlı olarak kullanılmaktadır.
