annuities market risk//the risk of retiring during economic downturn Explanation: the risk of retiring during economic downturn cccc Uzasadnieniem dla tak konserwatywnej polityki lokacyjnej miał być fakt, że OFE typu B miały być skierowane tylko do członków OFE, którzy ukończyli 50 lat (uchylony art. 229 ust. 7). Później wartość aktywów finansowych wzrosła, instytucje finansowe zarządzające funduszami emerytalnymi odrobiły straty i ponownie generowały zyski. Zniesienie obowiązku annuityzacji w erze kryzysowej miało dalsze konsekwencje. Annuitety z reguły nie są lubiane. Ale z faktu, że nie zawsze stanowią wystarczające antidotum na ryzyko długowieczności, nie wynika, że nie należy ich stosować. http://igte.pl/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Biuletyn_IGTE_13_2... cccc Annuities come in several forms, the two most common being fixed annuities and variable annuities. During a recession, variable annuities pose much more risk than fixed annuities. Variable annuities are tied to market indexes, which recessions tend to pummel. Fixed annuities, by contrast, offer guaranteed rates of return. Though fixed annuities provide peace of mind during recessions, they tend to underperform, at least compared to their variable counterparts, when the economy is doing well. During good times, variable annuities reward investors willing to shoulder higher risk by providing, on average, more aggressive returns. https://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/092815/what-are-ris... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 28 mins (2020-05-12 16:46:55 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Here is some reading on annuities market risk https://books.google.com/books?id=cA3WWz_urX8C&pg=PA24&lpg=P... bad-timing risk // sequence risk Explanation: It refers to the following phenomenon: if a person decides to retire any time soon during the transfer of a retiree's pension fund from the Otwarty fundusz emerytalny to the Zakład Ubezpieczeń Społecznych, and the market crashes (or is bullish) in the meantime, that person's pension fund may be significantly (negatively) affected for their retirement. It would literally be a "bad time" to start drawing on your pension. In English, you could either describe it more literally as a "bad-timing risk" or as a "sequence risk" (which is the more technical term.) In the link https://www.brightscope.com/financial-planning/advice/articl... it says: "The “Bad Timing” risk to your retirement One of the biggest things that create problems for people who retire is a market decline at the wrong time …. just as they retire. The reason is easy to understand. Retirement usually corresponds to the time people have gathered the most assets. Let’s assume that the retiree has managed to gather a million dollars. If this money is fully invested in the stock market and the market goes down 50%, he’s lost $500,000. Suddenly half the money he’s put aside has evaporated, just as he started on his retirement journey. If this happens the retiree may run out of money much earlier than planned." See the references to "timing" in the following links: https://www.moneysense.ca/save/retirement/retirement-its-all... https://www.theglobeandmail.com/investing/personal-finance/r... https://www.kiplinger.com/article/retirement/T038-C032-S014-... https://www.truewealthdesign.com/retirement-income-bad-timin... Regarding the "sequence risk," the article https://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/sequence-risk.asp says the following: "What Is Sequence Risk? Sequence risk is the danger that the timing of withdrawals from a retirement account will have a negative impact on the overall rate of return available to the investor. This can have a significant impact on a retiree who depends on the income from a lifetime of investing and is no longer contributing new capital that could offset losses. Sequence risk is also called sequence-of-returns risk. KEY TAKEAWAYS Timing is everything. Sequence risk is the danger that the timing of withdrawals from a retirement account will damage the investor's overall return. Account withdrawals during a bear market are more costly than the same withdrawals in a bull market. A diversified portfolio can protect your savings against sequence risk." |
