Polecamy fragment naszego autorskiego wywiadu o związkach. A to wszystko dzięki Waszym pytaniom, jakie piszecie do nas w komentarzach.

emotionally battered
Explanation:
Out of other similar alternatives, such as emotionally tormented, emotionally scarred or emotionally traumatized, I think "emotionally battered" works best in this case and sounds most appropriate. It describes intense, sustained emotional abuse resulting in significant trauma.

The definitions of batter on dictionary.com are as follows:

"1. to beat persistently or hard; pound repeatedly.
2. to damage by beating or hard usage:"

The text refers to abusive relationships in which people can be emotionally traumatized over long periods. At some point after enough sustained abuse, one can be deemed emotionally battered. This expression is quite a bit stronger than "emotionally bruised," as suggested by Tomasz. When I think of emotional bruising, I think of a one-time incident where I was hurt, but from which I recover rather easily and quickly – much like a bruise itself.

To be emotionally battered is to have sustained emotional abuse for a much more extended period (months, years, or decades). One would probably need psychological intervention at that stage.

There is a PTSD-like condition called "Battered woman syndrome," which refers to the actual physical violence that a woman may suffer. To say "emotionally battered" is to use the word metaphorically for being beaten up emotionally over time. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battered_woman_syndrome
