Italian term or phrase: bene diffuso
Any ideas of how best to translate the term "bene diffuso" in a legal studies thesis, avoiding if possible (but perhaps it's not!) such terms as "asset" or "property", as the theme of the thesis is the importance of considering natural elements as worthy of protection in their own right, not just for their utility to man. The context is: "Un deciso passo avanti culturale sarebbe di porre sotto protezione tutti gli “alberi vetusti” ovunque essi si trovino, considerati quindi bene diffuso di rilevante interesse ambientale." Thanks in advance for your help.

diffuse/widespread environmental interest

Explanation:
You could also perhaps use "common interest". Bene in this contect means interest in the sense of a right, as you text refers to further on. To avoid repeating interest, I think you can use environmental or environment-related with the first "bene" interest.

bene diffuso / di rilevante interesse ambientale /
diversified asset / of considerable environmental worth /

Explanation:
common good, interest or *weal* doesn't seem to hang well together with what comes after.

Note the inveterate and incorrigible Daily Mail on Line journalistic mix-up of defuse with diffuse in an approximation to English: 'Lionel Messi's agents and lawyers intend to diffuse tensions - caused by his announced departure - by arranging a meeting with FC Barcelona's management'. This reverses the meaning from defusing the shock to spreading the aggravation.

Example sentence(s):
  • diversified mix of environmental infrastructure assets. PORTFOLIO AT A ... of wind farms where the relevant project company has sufficient land rights to ... environmental assets in the interests of shareholders

widespread natural resource

Explanation:
I like to think of trees as natural resources our planet has provided us and itself with...adding the word natural here may help.

considerati quindi bene diffuso di rilevante interesse ambientale

hence considering them a widespread natural resource of significant environmental worth
