Master i nivelit te pare Explanation: Hello, I suppose that words “level” and “cycle” are not used interchangeably, but Master and Diploma, are. In fact, the first cycle refers to the undergraduate studies, the second cycle to the graduate studies and third cycle to postgraduate studies. Nornally, the ECTS credits assigned to each cycle of studies are: • Upon completion of the first cycle of studies the student is awarded a Bachelor’s Degree; (180 ECTS) • Upon completion of the second cycle of studies the student is awarded a Master’s Degree; (120 ECTS) • Upon completion of the third cycle of studies the student is awarded a Ph.D. Degree. (depending/there’s no uniformity) However, within the second cycle, namely the Master’s degree, the law differentiates between Masters of the first level, also called Professional Masters (Mastera Profesionalë), composed of 60 ECTS and Masters of the second level, also called “Masters of Science” or “Masters of Fine Arts” (“Mastera Shkencorë”, ose “Mastera të Arteve të Bukura”), composed of 120 ECTS. Yet, with only one Professional Master, containing 60 ECTS, although legally recognised, you haven’t come to a full stop of the second cycle, therefore, without an additional 60 ECTS (another Professional Master) you can’t proceed to doctoral studies,. Also, there are combinations of degrees, and their legal designation changes according to the ECTS distribution. When the undergraduate course comprises four years, meaning 240 ECTS, you have another degree, called “The Integrated Master’s Degree”, when the undergraduate course comprises five years and 300 ECTS you receive a Scientific Master’s Degree, or a Master’s in Fine Arts Degree that implies the Bachelor’s Degree, but only in specific fields, such as (per Albanian law): Architecture, Law, Medicine, etc. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 6 days (2020-08-23 10:36:07 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Bologna reform of Higher Education has had widespread repercussions in Albania, especially with regard to those that have completed their studies during the communist era. There’s a large body of professionals that have attended universities in pre-Bologna era. These individuals have concluded a 4-year programme of studies. That was the normal duration of studies in Albanian higher education institutions, back then. After the introduction of Bologna process, the big question was: These degrees would fall under ‘Bachelor”, or under “Master” degrees? If under Master degree, then, under which Master “Professional Master”, or under “Master of Science”? There were supporters of each option. Apparently, the proponents of the second option gained leverage and the degree for those professionals is “Integrated Master’s degree”. The addendum ‘of the second level’ to the diploma, refers to the fact, that this master is equalled ‘ex lege’ *by virtue of the law, to the Master of Science, or a Master in Fine Arts Degree (120 ECTS) and not as Professional Master (60 ECTS). Thus, Master and Diploma are used interchangeably. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 6 days (2020-08-23 11:14:53 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I need to make a revision to the first comment (but, I cannot find that option). Nonetheless, I would like to clarify a point that may cause confusion. When attempting to enroll in doctoral studies, you ought to have completed a Master of Science (MSc) programme or a Master in Fine Arts (MA) programme. So, two Professional Masters (PM) wouldn’t be the regular route guaranteeing access to the doctoral studies. However, since Bologna process offers the opportunity to accumluate and transfer credits, some of the credits acquired in PM programmes may be acknowledged by MSc programmes. So, this route is a bit impractical, and used in the comment solely for ECTS emphasis. |
