Malhoun Explanation: Malhoun is a typically Moroccan genre where many elements of literature and the Moroccan arts converge and are underpinned by the rhythms of Andalous music (the zajal) and popular melodies. A true poetic art, Malhoun is the most elaborate form of poetry that exists in Moroccan Arabic. Trained at the Meknes conservatory by one of the greatest Malhoun masters, Houssein Toulali, Majda Yahyaoui is well known in Morocco for a talent that has won her many prizes. http://www.fesfestival.com/en07/artists-city-festival-2007.p... -------------------------------------- Malhoun: Semi-classical poetry and music tradition dating back to the Moorish settlement of Andalusia in southern Spain. http://worldmusic.nationalgeographic.com/worldmusic/view/pag... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 6 mins (2007-07-28 18:43:32 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- More info: ------------ Al Malhoun If Al Ala is the music of the elite and posh families, Al Malhoun, however, is common in popular areas and among and craftsmen. Etymologically, the word Al Malhoun comes from "Lahana" meaning: not to conform to the rule. For craftsmen, it is the only means to break with work monotony. Al Malhoun would be originating from the very refined local popular songs since it is a production of the zajal.poetry. http://www.maroc.ma/NR/exeres/772587C4-6FBA-46D7-A54D-CA38D0... |
