Notes to answerer
Asker: I assumed it was an indigenous word or slang for a neighbourhood. The author later says that these areas became حي. I am tempted to transliterate 'hella' with a footnote to say these are the old quarters before it was standardised?

  -> Actually and for my surprise, being a Nubian I found out that many Nubian words are pretty similar to some English words (as in pronunciation and meaning). I think borrowing has played a great part in such respect as a means of word formation
