في أحد الأيام قدم إلى سوق الزاهية مجموعة من الناس، شعث اللحى، مغبري الوجوه، وذوو شعور طويلة، وأطمار بالية تُظهر الزهد في الحياة وكثرة السفر. يقولون إنهم من الجماعة السلفية المحتسبة. أخذ أحدهم يصيح في السوق بصوته الجهوري: ((يا إخوان من منكم يحفظ آية من كتاب الله ويريد تبليغها؟ فعليه الانضمام إلينا. ملابسك التي عليك وفراشك الذي تنام عليه والحق بالركب الذي يحبه الله ورسوله. هيا يا إخوان ألا يوجد أحد فيكم يريد الأجر العظيم؟ ألا يوجد أحد فيكم يريد مرافقة النبيين والمرسلين في الجنة؟ ألا أحد فيكم يريد أن يكون ما بينه وبين نعيم الجنة الخالد الذي لا ينتهي سوى الموت؟ آية واحدة تحفظها وتبلغها يكون لك أجرها وأجر من عمل بها إلى يوم القيامة. يا باغي الخير أقبل وبلغ عن الله تعالى آية. لا تكونوا يا إخوان كمثل الذين غرتهم الحياة الدنيا واطمأنوا بها،....)).
