Explanation:
Why didn't the author use the word حجاب or نقاب ? He/she could have. Maybe I am not aware that محرم is commonly used in Arabic to refer to the veil. This may be. Otherwise, I would be likely to translate it as "that which declares her forbidden."

prayer clothes or other clothing to conceal the body


Explanation:
It sounds like it is not necessarily only the hijab or headscarf but something to cover the whole body...so maybe you could say something like she hastily threw on her prayer clothes (or whatever best fits the context). That's what I would probably do if I were suddenly running out of the house for some reason. In other contexts, it might refer to the hijab/abaya or whatever a woman customarily wears to conceal both her hair and body.
