neutral  Youssef Chabat: mr fouad I'm sorry, I think I would have agreed 1000% if there wasn't that (ال)

-> You should agree even more (maybe 10,000%) with ال. It is the definite article (THE good old man).

agree  Yassine El Bouknify: What do you think of translating it into: "the righteous old man" since we normally attribute the quality of righteousness to religious and old people
46 mins
-> I follow the K.I.S. principle in translation (Keep It Simple). Without further context, it would be misguided, although tempting, to project our own connotations on the text. "Righteous" is a word we don't mess with unless we know a lot more.

the pious/righteous scholar

Explanation:
The word salih comes from salah which refers to piety, rectitude or righteousness. The Arabic word shaykh - refers to an Islamic scholar. In the context of an Islamic document, we can simply say 'scholar'

The pious man

Explanation:
Our neighbor was a
pious man who used to stand in prayer all night, from beginning to end.” The
girl thought that he was a pillar, because she would only climb up the roof of her
house [to sleep] at night and [always] find him standing [there]. A Sufi related:
“In [one’s] sleep [one encounters] some realities that do not occur in [one’s]
waking state. Thus, in a dream a man can see the Elect One – peace be upon
him – [his] Companions, and the pious Muslims of the earlier generations
(salaf), while he is unable to see them in his waking state. Likewise, he can see
God in a dream, which is a great distinction.”
this extract is taken from Al-Qushayri’s Epistle on Sufism
