however far back Explanation: In English, to show the generational stretch, you really need to introduce great-grandparents, because that is the point at which the series begins to look like a stretchy, repetitive chain. The following are the simplest options to choose from: Parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc. Parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and so on. Parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and so forth. Parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and so on and so forth. Since the Arabic source text does not explicitly mention great-grandparents, you can skip them if you don't feel comfortable taking this liberty. Also, since the Arabic source text splits parentage into fathers and mothers, you can reflect that in your translation if you feel so inclined: Fathers, mothers, grandfathers, grandmothers, and so forth. The expressions above use an open-series structure. I am presenting these options in my answer first because they are the simplest. They are not necessarily the best in every type of document. If you prefer a closed-series structure, like the Arabic expression, you can try: Fathers, mothers, grandfathers, grandmothers, however far back. Fathers, mothers, grandfathers, grandmothers, as many generations back as the case may be. Fathers, mothers, grandfathers, grandmothers, up to whichever generation the case may be. |
