Bosnian term or phrase: radioamater
"Samo mi je jednom javila preko radioamatera da ne dolazim."
Bosnian to English translation

I am translating a novel that takes place during wartime. In this sentence, the man is a soldier talking to his wife. The communication is taking place via an amateur radio transmitter, according to the dictionary, but I was wondering if there was a more common way of referring to the device/method of communication.

I would like the general American/British English speaking public to understand without too much trouble.

Thank you!

Amateur radio operators are also known as radio amateurs or hams. The term "ham" as a nickname for amateur radio operators originated in a pejorative usage by operators in commercial and professional radio communities. The word was subsequently adopted by amateur radio operators.
