You might think it's a big topic and may be philosophical to you. I beg to disagree because if we didn't discuss it, I don't think we would have known there were actually more details about the context which was not given in the first place. We, including tanglsus, might just give inadequate translations for the term as requested by Asker Yi Cao.

I thought you appreciate at least the Asker divulged more context after my prompting.

I've noticed that a few KudoZ questions were not given enough context and led to inaccurate suggestions. Who do you think would suffer? It's the askers themselves. We are just helping them.

Intotheworld: In divorce cases when one party, especially man, claims he still has 情义 you've to be careful because in many legal cases the real 情义 will show when solicitor asks him how much he could support the ex and child(ren). If he hesitates about the amount, the “real” 情义 will show.

In this case it sounds like a gambling case. Without too much details on the context, one could assume that the husband claims he is a really “caring" person especially towards the ex and the child, but in fact he will need money for gambling too. Patronizing is the reality. LOL.

I've done many witness statements for divorce cases when working for a solicitor's firm. I chose to use neutral and more specific words related to the actual case when it comes to describe a person's integrity. Using less adjectives such as "caring" or "thoughtful" or "supporting" is key unless supported by the actual facts.

As I said, this kind of divorce thing is often complicated in human life. It's better for us to understand first and foremost how "highly" the man values his former relationship. Does he still have love towards the ex-wife? Why did they get the divorce?

It's very hard for us, the third party, to weigh how ’highly' he is still towards the relationship without knowing the actual feeling of the person though.

So, to use ‘friendship' is a safe option, because in most divorce cases there is no love any more between the parties hence judge could approve the divorce petitions.

On the other hand if it is only because of the son, we may say ”Out of affection and obligation towards his son, the husband still supports his ex wife.“

Would this version reflect better the context?

This family matter 情与义 thing is often complicated in human life.

Now you give more details about the couple having to support their son despite the divorce, I think it's more than "friendship" as I originally suggested, because the guy might feel having the responsibility towards his child (more than towards the woman with whom he has already long lost love, I guess).

I would suggest "friendship and obligation" to cover fully the source context.

Friendship ＝ （友）情 (因为爱情已随著离婚蒸发掉，所以只剩下友情咯！）
Obligation = 义（务） to cover the son's part.

I think it should be more than enough to cover your source complex situation in real life.

e.g. Out of friendship and obligation, the husband still supports his ex wife despite the divorce.

You can then add the support of his son's bit to reflect what his obligation is all about.

English-speaking readers should understand easily.
