an ineffective measure Explanation: …the 5th Mountain Division, already in Greece, had to be employed, a measure which proved to very successful http://www.history.army.mil/books/wwii/104-13/104-13.htm Israeli Military-led Retaliation Attacks on the PLO and .... not only need to determine if measures are ineffective, but also if policies produce harmful effects http://www.rutgerscps.org/publications/Lum_Terrorism_Review.... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs (2014-01-18 13:27:29 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- "I think some ineffective measures are used as a result of successful lobbying from commercial interests. This certainly applies to RWT" Rune Elvik, 18/03/2013 http://www.webpronews.com/uk-pirate-bay-isp-blockade-did-not... |

would be futile (/fruitless/in vain…) Explanation: the closest equivalent for "unproductive course of action" would be “(up/down) a blind alley” (e.g. http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/396400.html ) but I think “futile” etc. might sound better here (e.g. http://thesaurus.com/browse/futile ) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs (2014-01-18 13:34:19 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I am thinking of the stock phrase “resistance would be futile”. In your case it would be “assault”, e.g. “After reviewing the situation and consulting with Vice-Admiral Alexander Cochrane, Lambert decided another assault would be futile.” ( http://www.eighteentwelve.ca/?q=eng/Topic/85 ) |
