Czech term or phrase: česká kotlina
Dear colleagues,

the expression "česká kotlina" appears within a Czech academic article on sociology of religion and the target language is English. I would like to presearve the style of the author and as such, I would like to find a similar expression in English which would convey the expressiveness, colour and style of the Czech one. What I am looking for here, is an English metaphorical expression that would do justice to its Czech counterpart. Please find below the sentence in which this expression appears. Should you need any more information, please let me know and I will provide it.

"To samozřejmě není nic specifického pro českou kotlinu druhé poloviny 50. let – jde o klasicky osvícenský náhled na možnosti a cíle vědy."

Thank you very much for your help
With my best wishes to you all,

Explanation:
I think it is best to forget about the "kotlina" - an English-speaking readership would not have a clue what you were talking about (much in the same way as we do not understand France being referred to as the "hexagon"). I think you will have to forget about the "colour" and just use something like "was not confined to" "Of course the Czechs were not alone in this respect".... or something like that. Ceska kotlina is used as a throwaway term in Czech - there is no throwaway equivalent in English. Otherwise you are going to be signalling "translated" in big red ugly letters to the reader.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you, Charles, this is really helpful. I wasn't sure whethere there wasn't any similar term like that in English. Since there is not, you are perfectly right to say that I should stick to the 'boring' but safe route!!! thank you!!!

disagree  Maria Chmelarova: Česka kotlina s Č-neexistuje ale existuje česká kotlina, kde sa tým myslí takmer celá geografická jednotka Čiech okrem pohorí na hraniciach s okolitými štátmi.

" czech society "

Explanation:
" česká kotlina " a " česka občina " (hist.) v prenesenom vyzname
Pod touto metaforou chapeme ze sa jedna o " siroku " spolocnost.
Kotlina- v geoegrafii je chapana ako hlboka a siroka (otvorena) geograficka jednotka na rozdiel od doliny (hlboka ale uzka) atd.
Autor pouzil metaforu, to uz viete.
Text si vyzaduje este dalsi " vyraz " (wide open czech society, broader, large and etc.;)

tiez : kotlina (caldron) v pren. vyzname - miesto kde to vrie (simmer, boiling, brewing)- nespokojnost spolocnosti, kde sa caka na otvoreny prejav nespokojnosti) , zavisi to od celeho textu.
