ODS gives 'Rigsborg' as Christiansborg, after it was rebuilt in 1906, but that is not what is meant here.

I have found references to the largest of ´rigsborgene´ being Vordingborg, and that there was one in Gladsaxehus in Skåne, and one in Tranekær...

Castles, fortifications, fortresses abound in my text, which is actually about dendrochronology and how it casts new light on Danish history in particular.

Rigsborgene also seem to have been a German phenomenon - but what are they called in English?
Thanks for any suggestions!

English translation:royal castle
Explanation:

Notes to answerer
Asker: Many than´ks for a good suggestion. The context made it very clear that these castles were fortified, and why, so on this occasion I felt it was too much of a good thing to add the word to the term for the castles.
