They can also be used as a measure of how much effort is expected to complete a course, and in combining courses to make up a programme.
60 ECTS are the equivalent of full-time study for an academic year.
It could consist of four courses of 15 ECTS, or smaller courses. The scope of a master's thesis could be something like 30 ECTS, to be written over half of an academic year.
