Danish term or phrase: iløn
A poem written by Caspara Preetzmann (Caralis) :
"Og naar Maanen fra Sky
Over Marker og By
Udgyder sin sølverne Flod,
Vil mig fængsle dens Skin
Paa din Pande, din Kind,
Vil jeg knæle iløn ved din Fod"

English translation:in hiding
Explanation:
Archaic language for 'secretly', 'in hiding'. It should be spelled in two words in Danish 'i løn'.
The same words are used in Grundtvig's *Et barn er født i Bethlehem' (... en fattig jomfru sad i løn ...).

Apparently the poem is a translation of Shelleys 'To the queen of my heart':

The English text and the Danish translation both support the idea of secrecy.
The ODS reference has an example of 'iløn' in one word in Shakespeare, so this is not an error as I first thought: http://ordnet.dk/ods/opslag?id=497534

Thanks Marianne and everyone else for your help. I didn't have to translate the whole poem, just that line, as it was used as a quote. I finally decided on "secretly" here but have asked the client to confirm.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Aha. That explains why I couldn't find it. I now have a definition: "løn2 : [i løn] (hemmeligt) in secret, secretly, clandestinely." I think the "secret" sense fits best in this context. Thanks, Marianne.

  -> thanks!

agree  aha: Jeg kan finde adskillige referencer til iløn brugt i betydningen i skjul, men ingen der antyder underkastelse/ydmyghed. Jeg kan heller ikke se, hvordan en planteart, der slet ikke vokser i Norden, skulle have fundet vej til den ældre nordiske litteratur.

disagree  kolya: I disagree because, #1 this is an old poetry style or an old poetry which use object name to show feelings or special matters, try reading a book by Molawi masnavi , or mahsati gangi......or even Kaj Munk, or someone who uses lots of similie...or metaphor

Explanation:
With all respect, to Marianne, S, I would like to say that this is an old Danish or Nordic if you will, term. iløn in here is likening of a person to a tree "Ild-Løn (Acer ginnala). when this person in love so deeply with her or his lover, showing off her/his love by letting the other know that he or she is almost in prostration before the others love.
Vil mig fængsle dens Skin
Paa din Pande, din Kind,
Vil jeg knæle iløn ved din Fod" will I kneel down (in prostration, or kneeling in humbleness before your feet) when a person so humbled and powerless before love.....
***Ild-Løn;( iløn) I am certain almost 1000% that like many other poets, Danish or Nordic poets also used to abbreviate some of the words or names of the objects and thus turning them in to expressions, with rhyming. that is why the word or term "iløn" does not exist collective as mentioned but in separate form as " i løn " and that has a very different meaning, no connection with this sentence.***

Notes to answerer
Asker: Hi kolya. Your suggestion fits my context perfectly. But I would like to have found one authoritative source to confirm this information, and I have not found one. And nothing in the Ordbog over det danske sprog. Despite that, I still want to at least offer it to the client for discussion. She may well know herself.
