I pondered that when putting together my answer, but opted for "row house" instead, as I don't think townhouse is quite right. Have a look at this Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Townhouse

I see what you mean about there not really being a standard terrace. I think I was cheating: sort of combining standard rijtjeshuis with "terrace" ;)

Although I like your "modest terrace" better, I still think standard terrace is OK though. Quite a few hits even (when searching for: " a standard terrace" ... https://www.google.co.uk/#q=" a standard terrace" )

I've also lived in Utrecht, but in a studentenflat, back when I still fancied myself a bit of an artist/art student. That is, before I realised that I was destined to become One of the Greatest Dutch-English Translators of All Times (here on Proz) ;)

Just thinking about Hoofddorp still bums me out big time.

Seeing as terraced housing, in the UK at least, ranges from slums in mining towns to Nash's wedding cake creations around Regent's Park, with infinite variations in between, 'standard terrace' is largely meaningless. It also gets no meaningful results on Google. 'Modest terrace' would be more fitting.

Blimey Michael, my wife used to teach in Hoofdorp about 22 years ago...

The text is basically about upward mobility, and the 'doorzonwoning' (lived in one myself in Zuilen in Utrecht, it wasn't social housing but housing built for the working class at the time) should really be seen in this context as the Dutch version of the 2 up/2 down: it's representative, not literal, no point in exactly describing the architecture, this is about class divisions and class mobility.

The first house we lived in, in Hoofddorp was definitely a doorzonwoning, and definitely a rijtjeshuis. The second one we lived in, although no longer a doorzonwoning, was also definitely a rijtjeshuis.

We lived in two rijtjeshuizen in Hoofddorp when I was growing up, one of them was a doorzonwoning, the other was not. I know what "doorzonwoning" means. I never said "rijtjeshuis = doorzonwoning", and it is obvious that "rijtjeshuis ≠ doorzonwoning".

"Standard terrace" (in my answer) was my attempt to come up with a general equivalent suitable for use in Asker's specific context. As usual, you seem to be completely misunderstanding me.

The author in Asker's context says "Een standaard doorzonwoning voldoet niet meer." It isn't relevant here that you can look all the way through a real Dutch "doorzonwoning". What is relevant is it is being contrasted with rich people's grachtenpanden.

De UK- terraces zouden in het NLs 'arbeiderswoningen' zijn, zoals die te vinden zijn in het Philipsdorp en Batadorp, zeer zeker geen doorzonwoningen!

After giving this some thought, the only option would seem to be to leave it in Dutch, stick it in quotes, and follow it with a description. Sth along the lines of:

‘doorzonwoning’ (a typical kind of Dutch terraced house where the living room traverses the building, from the street to the garden side)

[please note that the above, again, only applies to trying to translate the term "doorzonwoning" in a context unlike Asker's. for my solution to Asker's specific context, see my answer]

I suppose it's untranslatable, but I'm wondering what you think about sth like "house with a through lounge", which is what the various dictionaries have resorted to.

I am of course ignoring the fact that in this specific question, this is probably all irrelevant, as actually using the correct term would merely distract from the meaning of the text.

There is indeed no need to get into the tricky details of the fact that a "doorzonwoning" is open on both sides, and lets the light through. The text just needs sth along the lines of a standard "rijtjeshuis" (as opposed to one of those beautifully done up grachtenpanden for graphic designers in A'dam or Utrecht), which will obviously be different in each English-speaking country.

Here in the UK, e.g., sth like "standard terrace house" would be fine in the Asker's context. I understand what freek was getting at with "former social housing" (here in the UK, this would basically refer to standard rijtjeshuizen, which are funnily enough quite expensive these days due to the shortage of houses on the market), but it would just sound weird in the context.

In reply to Freek, I know this, that is why I said "suburban" would give the wrong idea to an American. See thread.
I think it is a matter of perspective: "standard Dutch suburban house" is I think what the poster meant.
Social housing I just think is not right here because the text is not talking about size or qualities of the house. It is about other aspects of how it looks on the outside/to urban planners who think about different segments of populations. If you then talk about social housing you are not talking about the right segment altogether.
The solution, my solution for now is to just say "The standard house" because any of the other would confuse the viewer and be too long for the subtitling.

En bij een standard SUBurban house, denkt een Amerikaan al zeker niet aan een rijtjeshuis! Waarschijnlijk heeft de Ami een beter beeld bij 'social housing' m.b.t. doorzonwoningen/woningen voor Jan met de Pet...!

Het verschil tussen doorzonwoning en suburban house is veel te groot! En is een 'standard' house in de VS wel een uniform huis... (does it even exist)?

Many thanks for the suggestions. I agree with Tina that since it is only mentioned in passing, "standard house" or "standard suburban house" probably does the trick. 'Social housing' seems less adequate as that is not the most distinctive quality of a doorzon, they can also be private property. "Historicising" refers to the introduction of elements by the owners, where each house can have something unique (on the outside, e..g. a little tower, cupola, or another color roof), an own identity, as happened in the past when there was no planning of housing on a larger scale in the NL (old city centers). The term was used here in an interview with an expert. I also liked "cookie cutter" house, it renders the idea of the mass produced houses identical in design. I'll think about it and let you know through the page.

I think this is one of those words you cannot translate and I wonder if it is really necessary; the text is not really about the "doorzonhuis", it's just mentioned in passing. I think that for an American (and most other English-speakers) watching this video, the term 'standard suburban house" would do just fine.

I don't fully understand the context (for example why is it "we" and not "ze", and what does it say before and after this?), but could it just mean that they don't want standard, boxy houses like everyone else? If so, would "cookie-cutter houses" work?
Also "historicising" will sound a bit odd to most laypeople. It's a specialist term from art and architecture. Again I'm not sure of the context in which it's being used - does it mean they have authentic historical interiors?
