Het is dus een contract waarbij de ene partij (de renteschuldenaar) er zich toe verbindt om aan een andere partij (de renteheffer), een rente uit te keren in ruil voor een bepaald kapitaal of voor bepaalde goederen (zoals vaak onroerende goederen) die de renteheffer niet zal terugeisen. Lijfrente kan uitgekeerd worden tot de dood van de renteheffer of tot de dood van een derde die op het genot van de lijfrente geen recht heeft (art. 1971 B.W.). De renteplichtige kan zich van de uitkering van de rente niet bevrijden, door de teruggave van het kapitaal of de ontvangen goederen aan te bieden (art. 1979 B.W.) VERZEKERINGSCONTRACT Het verzekeringscontract is een overeenkomst waarbij de ene partij (de verzekeraar) er zich toe verbindt om tegen betaling van een premie door de andere partij (de verzekerde), deze het verzekerd risico te vergoeden (bvb. in geval van ongeval, brand, diefstal etc.).
