agree  Barend van Zadelhoff: Klinkt geweldig! Waar haal je die vandaan!? Het heeft niets met corruptie te maken, de elite had toen 'het volste recht' om elkaar posities toe te schuiven. Er is in ieder geval geen sprake van negatieve connotatie. Met dank ook aan writeaway.

Het bestuur van de steden werd in de achttiende eeuw was in handen van de regentenoligarchie. Regentenfamilies trokken zich terug uit de actieve handel en beperkten zich tot bestuur en vermogensbeheer. Het vergeven van ambten volgens toerbeurt of contract van correspondentie werd onderdeel van het beheer van hun privé-vermogens. In de loop van de achttiende eeuw werd de regentenklassen een hechte oligarchie. De buitens en het grondbezit van de regenten leken symbolisch voor de toenemende aristocratisering van deze bestuursfamilies. De families die hun vermogen hadden opgebouwd in de zeventiende eeuw, bleven vooral als financiers betrokken bij de handel en nijverheid. Zij belegden hun geld in aandelen VOC, obligaties van steden en Staten. De financiering van buitenlandse ondernemingen en leningen van vorsten, gaf hen invloed in de politiek. Buitenlandse leningen leverden tegen het einde van de eeuw een toenemende geldstroom naar de Republiek op. De opkomst van de geldhandel in de achttiende eeuw leek gelijk op te gaan met de afsluiting van de elite voor nieuwe instroom.
