Dutch term or phrase: Patroonvormer
This is something at the end of a production line that arranges cans into a shape (pattern)? so they can be picked up by a gripper and palletised.

But I'm having no success in finding an English term, so any help appreciated

"The movement of the cans is interrupted during their progress to form a nested pattern of cans. This interruption is caused by pattern former 52. The pattern former in this embodiment is an angle iron having a plurality of pins 54 spaced along its lower surface. The pins are spaced from one another with center distances exactly equal to the width of the cans. When the pattern former 52 is in its lowered position the pins project a sufficient distance downwardly into the path of the cans arresting the progress of the cans."

We designed the Stewart Systems Pattern Former to be a versatile, configurable part of your packaging operation. It is designed to place bagged product in a pre-programmed array (via recipe control), then place that formed array into your trays or baskets, supplying trays or baskets filled with product and ready for your distribution channel.

A wide range of baskets and trays can be filled with the Pattern Former. Any nesting basket or tray from 30.38″L X 25.75″ W X 6.00″ H (maximum) to 24.5″L X 21.0″ W X 2.75″ H (minimum) or any size in between are filled with speed and ease."

Features
• Integrated Robotic Layer Pattern Forming Module

The cases/trays enter the pattern former in single file via a metering belt module ensuring the cases remain on a consistent pitch. The metering belt discharges the cases onto a wide mat-top conveyor where the layer forming will occur. As cases enter the layer forming module they are located and tracked by two high-speed robots. The robot(s) capture the case as it is moving forward (only a single robot is working on lower speed products), rotates it and/or moves it left or right as required to form the layer pattern and releases the case. The case continues to advance forward through the layer forming section to the layer staging section."

"With some combinations of pack and pallet size, it is possible that the only layer pattern available will have spaces between adjacent packages; provided these are not too great, a satisfactory bonding effect may still be obtained but modifications will be required to the pattern-forming mechanisms on the assembly table. Either overhead retractable wedges or rising stops between the conveyor rollers are incorporated to create and maintain the spaces while the layer is formed. Sometimes a section of the pattern forming table is fitted with driven rollers to ‘open out’ packages and create a desired gap.
Turning crates or packs through 90c in order to produce the required pattern is carried out at the infeed to the machine immediately after the metering conveyor which not only counts the packages and activates the subsequent handling operations but also separates the packages to allow turning, where necessary. When turning is required, an air-operated stop locates off-centre on the leading edge of the package and the latter then rotates around this pivot; the operation is one that takes time - far longer than if a package is allowed to enter the machine unrestricted. To avoid undue delays (which would reduce the overall output of the machine), an assessment must be made of the proportion of packages which have to be turned to achieve the desired pattern; if this is well in excess of 50%, it would be advantageous to turn all the packages on the conveyor system before the palletiser and then re-turn under 50% of the packages as they are indexed into the machine. The turning operation may be speeded-up by adding a swinging arm to the pivot mechanism which positively twists the package as required."
