Dutch to English translations [PRO] Marketing - Marketing / Market Research
Dutch term or phrase:bewust
I have seen the existing KudoZ entries for this terms, but didn't feel as though these answered my question, so here goes...
Such an innocuous seeming word, but always tricky to translate. In this case, the sentence consists of two words: 'Bewust XXX', where XXX is the name of the company. I'm looking for a translation that conveys the gist of this slogan, it doesn't have to win a beauty contest. Unfortunately, it has me completely flummoxed!
You do tend to see this word quite a bit in advertising, e.g. here in The Hague the backs of buses are now daubed with the line 'Kies bewust, kies de aardgasbus', where it seems to be saying something like 'feel good about yourself and take the green option'. You also hear it in phrases like 'na mijn ongeluk leef ik nu veel bewuster' or 'ik eet nu veel bewuster'. But what is it in English?? I almost feel as though it conjures up some zen-like quality in the Dutch mind....
I agree with Dave. But it's also of, course, that in English if you use "more" you have to have an "than". It's a pity they didn't choose for their Englsh slogan just simply 'XXX. Aware." - works too. (but I have to say with a slightly uneasy insinuation - Aware, Beware.). Aware of itself and its cunstomers. - i'd say.
Fwiw, I just received a memo circulated by the insurance company in question. It turns out they have chosen 'More Aware. XXX.' as the English version of 'Bewust XXX'. The rationale behind the slogan is that the company is now more aware of what customers want, rather than the customer making a conscious choice to go with them. As always, context is everything!
NNet als het woord bewust kan mindful zowel op de klant slaan als op de klant. Ook als dit op de Amerikaanse markt terecht komt, dan is het idee dat je de keuze hebt belangrijk. Niemand wil hier horen dat ze iets moeten kiezen omdat het bedrijf heeft bedacht dat zij de enige juiste keuze is.
Hi I went and checked the way it is used in Afrikaans and agree with mindful, consciously but generally it seems that in this context they use knowingly. Always so difficult to find the right advertising attention grabber which is what they want here I believe. I will go and check on the Afrikaans advertising and see what I can find for you, if anything

Like I said, i feel that is the customer who is "bewust" or who can make a "bewuste" choice, not XXX.
