Echoing what you said re "eerder een verzwakking dan een versterking", in my opinion, in English, if something "corresponds closely", it in fact juist niet suggests a one-on-one similarity. :-)
In short, I think "corresponds closely" is actually a very nice, exact translation of "goed overeenkomen met".
