From this perspective, 'fail' may be the only useful option among the three of them.

fail - to not do what is expected, needed or wanted

The key is not why the drain failed but how to treat the patient if the drain does fail.

In a medical context, 'gesneuveld' may have a specific meaning.
More likely 'gesneuveld' means the nasobiliary drain for some reason was no longer in place, was no longer in the correct position.
It should be repositioned or replaced by another one.

This is what 'gesneuveld' usually means when they say the drip is 'gesneuveld'.

For example:

Terwijl ik patiënt A onderzoek, gaat opnieuw mijn pieper. De afdeling: er is een infuus gesneuveld en de patiënt moet nog antibiotica krijgen. Kan ik een nieuwe komen prikken?

As far as “no longer working”: a procedure (nor a stent/any object with a specific purpose) no longer works only if it fails.
Otherwise, I think gesneuveld here means an unsuccessful procedure/ failed attempt” . As if they didn’t make to the goal, like ‘killed in action before one reached the gates of the city’. Didn’t get there.
Horrible use of language whatever the case may be.

In theory, it is of course also possible that a stent breaks inside the body. I looked it up, and so far I can find only one reference to something like this happening, one that is also a slightly different procedure. If that is the case with this particular patient, then Mike’s answer is fully appropriate. Just don’t forget to make it into a ‘stent’, and not the procedure. Although the question mark at the diagnosis of cholangitis makes this unlikely.
