Medical - Medical: Health Care
Dutch term or phrase: middel
"Primidone is een stof die in het lichaam wordt omgezet in fenobarbital. Het middel blijkt veel giftiger voor de lever te zijn en is beslist niet werkzamer dan fenobarbital. Bij de mens wordt dit middel daarom ook niet meer toegepast."

Hoe zouden jullie hier "middel" vertalen? En zijn er meerdere juiste vertalingen die in deze context passen? Het komt zo vaak voor dat ik moet kunnen afwisselen. Alvast bedankt.

Explanation:
In Dutch, the subject is often repeated or a synonym is used (as here: stof, middel) across consecutive sentences, while English tends to prefer a pronoun. Repetition of the subject can can sound awkward in English.

E.g.: Primidone is a substance that.... It is much more toxic...

--------------------------------------------------

It's a 'substance' or a 'drug'. Equally valid IMO.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks Chris, I see you're right. However, if you *would* translate the word, what would be an appropriate translation? Like in "Het is een middel dat ...."

Asker: Would "drug" be best?

Asker: Thanks.

agree  writeaway: there are huge stylistic differences between good English style and good Dutch style. The same holds true for other languages too and that's why I only translate into my native language
