Alles wat ik heb gezegd is absoluut niet persoonlijk bedoeld.
Je hebt gelijk dat er iets van irritatie is, of laat ik zeggen dat de reacties van jou en Willemina 'blew my mind'.
Ik zag mijn rol als te komen met een juiste definitie van 'uitvullen' zodat de aangeboden vertalingen zich op het juiste begrip zouden richten. Mijn zus was zo duidelijk over dat uitvullen (en kijk ook eens met de kennis die we nu hebben naar het woord) en Josephine, die volgens mij ook erg thuis is in die wereld bevestigde ook nog eens zonder een spoor van twijfel die betekenis, dat ik het idee had je geeft de ander precies wat die nodig heeft en die wil het niet accepteren.

Ik begreep echt niet meer wat hier nog aan de hand was.

Ik denk dat ieder van ons moeilijk zal kunnen accepteren dat iets wat goed is van de hand wordt gewezen.
Zo zag ik het, ik kon niet inzien waarom jullie niet konden inzien dat 'uitvullen' is wat ik duidelijk probeerde te maken.
Voor mij is 'uitvullen' nog steeds 'uitvullen' en ik zie niet in waarom de suggestie van Josephine niet zou kunnen worden overgenomen. I think it is just the right message.

Quite right! It is about getting the right message across. The client has to have his qualifications translated to be able to work the UK. It is therefore very important to get it right so that (a) you do not do any disjustice to the qualification of the client and (b) the client does not run the risk of "overselling" his qualification and gets into trouble at a later stage. And I do agree with Lianne, it is fun and interesting to look at this issue and this concept from all angles. The angle Barend offers included. I am really grateful for all the thought that everyone is putting into this.

I am not sure we need to get personal here, Barend. But if I have difficulty understanding what you call the exact meaning of uitvullen, it is probably because in my brain this word has a lot of connotations based on actual experience. I have heard the instruction 'medicijnen uitvullen' many times and have observed what people do in response to that instruction. To me it is a matter of understanding what the client wants to communicate. We are discussing an essential aspect of language: words resonating with experiencing and imagery. Why get annoyed about it? It's fun!

According to my pharmacist the meaning of filling out and dispensing are virtually the same (in US eng) and both are reserved for a licensed pharmacist. An assistant is regarded as 'an extension' of the pharmacist who will do the 'actual' work while the pharmacist specifically checks the beginning and end of the process. There was no equivalent in his mind for 'uitvullen' in the narrower sense other than indeed something like Josephine suggests, i.e. assembling the right quantity.

Since Willemina is communicating directly with her client, I would ask what he would like to convey. Topping up seems unusual to me too. Is the context (besides 'medicine') the translation of qualifications to apply for a job in another country? An option would be to describe that the student is able to or has experience performing all steps of filling a prescription under the (legally required) supervision of a pharmacist? A translation might be correct, but the purpose all in all is to get the right message across.

Of course the qualification of the student includes labelling.
However, one of the other things the student is required to perform correctly is 'uitvullen':

"De leerling kan het product uitvullen en inpakken". The product in this context is the medicine. I do get a lot of Google hits varying from "Recepten typen en uitvullen" to "herhaalmedicatie uitvullen" to "insulineampullen uitvullen".

I really don't understand why you can't accept the concept of 'uitvullen' as defined by Josephine and my sister: it can only mean one thing and you can literally read it from the context you offered yourself.

If Josephine would post her suggestion as an answer I would immediately agree.

Could you tell me why you can't accept the meaning of 'uitvullen' as defined? I honestly cannot understand why you can't seem to do so.

The discription of the qualification of the student does include labelling. The student is capable of translating information about the medication into unambiguous directions for use etc. So the student does label the products. Hope this helps. I have had a chat with the student who has given me this assignment and he maintains it is "topping up" which sounds rather odd....

A 'leerling apothekersassistent' will definitely not be able to fill a prescription (which is equivalent to dispensing a precsription), but will be able get things ready to be checked. A leerling would get the original pack or bulk pack, count out the tablets, pack them into a container, but leave the original bottle there for checking. Labelling is the next stage, Willemina has not mentioned this. Inpakken does not include labelling.

Apothekersassistenten in the Netherlands have quite a different role to pharmacy technicians in the US, Australia and the UK. They are allowed to do a lot more than pharmacy technicians. Here in Australia only a pharmacist is authorised to fill a prescription - and I am fairly sure it is the same in the US - I spent a few months there as a pharmacist, visiting university hospital pharmacies while I was on sabbatical leave.


Uitvullen betekent hier: de juiste hoeveelheid klaarzetten. Een leerling mag natuurlijk niet een voorschrift klaarmaken zonder gecontroleerd te worden bij de verschillende stappen.

Take a look at http://www.encyclo.nl/begrip/uitvullen. There is no Dutch definition to be found that fits with the above context. I think "afvullen" or "doseren" => measuring out the right quantity and packing it, that is what is mean here. So the use of uitvullen in the source is actually not right.

Het onderwerp ter sprake is een goede vertaling van het in de zin gebruikte woord uitvullen. Zelfs wanneer 'uitvullen' een variatie aan betekenissen/nuances kan hebben, moet er een Engels equivalent gevonden worden. Als ik hier naar de pharmacy loop en vraag wat 'fill prescriptions' precies betekent, en wie wat precies in een apotheek uitvoert, dan krijg ik waarschijnlijk dezelfde uitleg als die we in het Nederlands gevoerd hebben. Als je wilt dat ik dat doe, dan wil ik dat best ook nog wel doen (want daar koop ik ook mijn chocola).

Dat de apothekersassistent naast het klaarmaken/ klaarzetten van recepten (inclusief uitvullen van medicijnen), ook andere dingen doet, inderdaad het bereiden van producten doet hij/zij ook, verandert niets aan de betekenis van uitvullen

Je toelichting is in lijn met de referenties die ik bij m'n antwoord heb gegeven, en ik zou met een gerust hart 'fill prescriptions' voor jouw gevraagde vertaling gebruiken en de 'dispensing' reserveren voor de pharmacist die het beheer over een apotheek mag voeren. Dispensing meds wordt in die zin gebruikt.

Deze apothekersassistent wordt in het Engels Pharmacy technician genoemd. De beschrijving van zijn/haar studie betreft bovendien het samenstellen van medicatie uit grondstoffen etc., dus deze persoon is veel meer dan alleen iemand die in een apotheek werkt en de spullen klaarzet voor de patient. De apothekersassistent waar ik het over heb, kan ook in het ziekenhuis werken, schrijft etiketten, een werkplan volgen en een keuze maken voor bereidingstechniek etc. Misschien helpt dit...?

Ik maak uit je toevoegingen op dat je inmiddels begrijpt wat 'uitvullen' betekent: positieve ontwikkeling.

Maar je gooit het nu over een andere boeg en zegt ergo 'uitvullen is al het hele proces'

behalve dat deze redenering gewoon niet klopt, of je moet etikettering, secundaire verpakking, controleren op dubbelmedicatie, contra-indicaties, ontbrekende medicatie en waarschijnlijk nog meer als irrelevant beschouwen, is het ook nog een keer zo dat er recepten zijn waarbij er helemaal niet hoeft te worden uitgevuld, omdat de hoeveelheden al in de juiste verpakking beschikbaar zijn.

In dat geval bestaat het 'hele proces' dus uit al de andere handelingen en komt uitvullen er helemaal niet aan te pas

Zie m'n aanvullingen bij mijn antwoord. In het e-how artikeltje getiteld 'How to Become Licensed to Dispense Medicine' wordt aan het eind van de intro gezegd: 'Although a pharmacy tech may fill a prescription the pharmacist double checks the work.' En 'Students taking at least 1 credit can fill prescriptions at the Health Service Pharmacy.'

Barend's uiteenzetting klopt precies. Maar in het Engels hebben wij daar volgens mij niet eenzelfde uitdrukking voor. Wij zouden hier zeggen:

To count out (tablets/capsules)
To fill a bottle (liquid medicines)
To fill a jar (creams, etc)

To prepare:
Dit houdt in dat je grondstoffen samenvoegt en hier een bepaald product uit bereidt (als Barend al zei). Dat kan je zeker niet gebruiken.

Ik denk dat je het moet beschrijven met zoiets als: to count out or fill out the right quantity of a product.

Dit is de context:

"De leerling kan het product uitvullen en inpakken". The product in this context is the medicine.

De leerling kan het medicijn uitvullen en inpakken.

Dat lijkt me een vrij nauw gedefinieerde context.
En stemt sterk overeen met wat mijn zus zei: medicijnen vul je uit

zalf in tubes of potjes en pillen wrsch in strips en de volgende stap is dan de (secundaire) verpakking.

Maar stel nu dat dit klopt (ikzelf ben ervan overtuigd dat 'uitvullen' betekent wat ik heb geprobeerd uit te leggen) dan is het wel een heel lastig woord om te vertalen

Willemina weet waarschijnlijk meer over het niveau van de andere vereiste vaardigheden. Als die allemaal op een vergelijkbaar gedetailleerd niveau als dat van 'uitvullen' in de zin zoals Barend beschrijft liggen, dan kan die betekenis kloppen. Het hangt maw van de context af. En ik neem aan dat op de dagelijkse werkvloer taal een levendige aangelegenheid is en allerlei connotaties en gebruik krijgt. De betekenissen zullen hoe dan ook met elkaar samenhangen, etymologisch gesproken.

Ik wil nog even terugkomen op 'uitvullen', mede vanwege Lianne's bijdrage. Ik heb vandaag nog eens uitgebreider mijn zus geraadpleegd. Let wel zij is ervaren en actieve apothekersassistente. Het gaat om het volgende:

je hebt de volgende begrippen:
klaarzetten/klaarmaken
bereiden
uitvullen

'bereiden' houdt in dat je grondstoffen samenvoegt en hier een bepaald product uit bereidt (wordt niet zo veel gedaan in een apotheek)

'klaarmaken/klaarzetten' doe je met een recept; je maakt een recept klaar/zet een recept klaar voor een klant
'uitvullen' doe je met medicijnen: je vult medicijnen uit
'uitvullen' is een onderdeel van 'klaarmaken/klaarzetten'

klaarmaken is veel meer /tot klaarmaken behoort bijvoorbeeld ook etikettering, controleren op contra-indicaties, dubbelmedicaties en nog een aantal andere zaken

soms hoef je bij het klaarmaken van een recept geen medicijnen uit te vullen, omdat de verpakkingen al op het juiste formaat zijn

als je zalf uitvult (uit de grotere verpakking), zeg 10 gram, doe je dat in een tube.
pillen in doosjes, etc

uitvullen is niet meer/minder dan een medicijn UIT een grotere verpakking halen en daarmee een kleinere verpakking VULLEN

Ik heb even mijn zus gebeld, die is al apothekersassistente zo lang als ze leeft, en 'uitvullen' betekent dat je van een 'grotere hoeveelheid' een 'kleinere hoeveelheid' neemt: de hoeveelheid die gewenst is voor het betreffende recept

bijvoorbeeld je hebt een pot zalf van een kilo en je hebt drie gram nodig, dan vul je drie gram uit, je neemt drie gram uit de pot en gebruikt het voor het recept
