that the available translation is absolutely abysmal, but the point is that this one has 42 hits on English version of Dutch websites whereas Phil's suggestion which sounds better has none. When people try to find out what it is, it's important they can look it up.

Barend/Michael, I'm not trawling through 154000 hits, but none of the first 20 describe themselves as a temporary employment agency. Staffing seems more common, or 'recruitment agency for temporary work'. You just wouldn't normally call it 'temporary employment' either, but 'temporary work' or 'short-term work'.

I see the dictionary gives 'temporary employment agency'


1. this is ambiguous; an employment agency which is temporary, or an agency for temporary employment
2. If googled, gives a load of Dutch sites.

I might have used the word recruitment myself, had I not come across the entry in JurLex, and then seen a few official-looking documents that also use the JurLex translation. For example, this one:

"This Collective Labour Agreement does not apply to employers who are admitted as members to the Dutch Association of Intermediary Organisations and Temporary Employment Agencies (NBBU). The NBBU’s website lists an overview of these members." (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:lkEgBa6... ) (an official website (currently down) of the NL Ministerie van Sociale Zaken en Werkgelegenheid)

This "ruimste zin van het woord" seems to be conveyed nicely by the term "intermediary". I think maybe "recruitment" is a little too narrow. However, I have seen people use the term "recruitment" in translations of the NBBU's name, so I don't disagree with your answer.
