Dutch term or phrase: effectieve bundel
In nuclear physics, one talks of a primary beam ("primaire bundel" in Dutch) and a secondary beam ("secundaire bundel") as well as of stray radiation ("strooistraling"). The term in question occurs within a text on radiation protection, in this sentence:

De bronhouder heeft een stralingsopening waaruit de ioniserende straling van de bron (effectieve bundel) naar buiten kan treden.

I am wondering if "effectieve bundel" has a specific technical counterpart in English nuclear physics terminology or if the term in this sentence simply means "the effective part of the beam". So my question is for NL-->EN translators with knowledge of radiation protection.

useful beam
Explanation:
fysiek / materieel zijn de effectieve bundel en de primaire bundel identiek

taalkundig worden de tegendelen - effectief en niet-effectief - geïntroduceerd

Primary beam: that part of the X-radiation from an X-ray analysis unit which passes through an aperture of the tube housing and is intended for use as the primary source of X-radiation incident on a target.

effectief <-> niet-effectief

effectief = the part of the X-radiation intended for use as X-radiation incident on a target

bewust aangewende/gerichte bundel

niet-effectief = leakage radiation

leakage radiation = the radiation passing through a source housing except for that in the useful beam

beam
a unidirectional, or approximately unidirectional, emission of electromagnetic radiation or particles.

useful beam in radiology, that part of the primary radiation that is permitted to emerge from the tubehead assembly of an x-ray machine, as limited by the aperture or port and accessory collimating devices.

'useful beam' is exactly what you need.

De bronhouder heeft een stralingsopening waaruit de ioniserende straling van de bron (effectieve bundel) naar buiten kan treden.

This is the useful beam = primary radiation beam = primary beam (see definitions)

What is useful beam component supposed to mean?

the useful beam = the useful beam = de ioniserende straling van de bron die door de stralingsopening naar buiten komt = the complete primary beam

effectieve straling = gerichte, bewust aangewende straling van de bron
niet-effectieve straling = de lekstraling

Jij gaat de effectieve straling nog een keer opdelen.
Waarin als ik het vragen mag?
Die effectieve bundel die uit die opening komt, waarin wou jij die opdelen?
Wat er uit die opening komt, komt uit die opening.

So I will enter 'useful beam' as a glossary entry

Thanks Barend. I award you points for your research helping confirm my own research and feeling about the original term. I think "useful beam" on its own has the wrong connotations and expect that "useful beam component" would be the more intended translation, so your proposal come fairly close.
