This is from an assessment report of a patient.
Anyone a suggestion for "bijtrekpas"?

Going down stairs: If there is a handrail, make sure to use it. During the “Step-To” method, remember the phrase, “Down with the Bad”.

Safety descending steps is important; those with poor balance should use a step-to pattern, placing the prosthesis down first until balance has improved.

agree  philgoddard: Maybe "sideways and one step at a time", though perhaps that goes without saying.

  -> Thanks, Michael!

neutral  Kitty Brussaard: Not so much 'sideways' as starting with one leg and then advancing the other leg (up or down) to the same step before moving to the next step. See refs. / The patient probably feels insecure only when descending stairs.
20 hrs
-> Maybe, but if this was the case, the patient would also have difficulties going up, which the patient does not.

neutral  Barend van Zadelhoff: 1) They say nothing about moving up. 2) More importantly, whatever way she moves up, tells us nothing about the method she uses moving down, which doesn't need to be sideways at all./See ref for another def. of 'bijtrekpas' in this context.

Asker: Makes sense!... I will do a bit of digging in Google myself as well. I am actually recovering from a broken ankle myself and when I was on crutches with steps they always said something like hell before heaven or heaven before hell, can't remember...

https://issuu.com/mariken/docs/dialoog12/18

Which Foot Goes First When Walking Up or Down Stairs?
The phrases “up with the good, down with the bad”, or “the good go up to heaven, the bad go down to hell” are often used to help patients recall the appropriate step pattern for stair climbing after injury or surgery. If there is no rail for assistance, one must also learn how to appropriately use their assistive device on the stairs.

To properly ascend stairs, it is “up with the good.” While holding onto the rail with one hand, advance the stronger leg first placing it on the step above where you are standing. After this unaffected leg is appropriately placed on the step, advance the weaker leg up to the same step that the stronger leg is on. If there is no rail to hold on to, a cane is placed on the upper step at the same time or after placement of the weaker leg.

To properly descend stairs, it is “down with the bad.” While holding onto the rail with one hand, advance the weaker leg first placing it on the step below where you are standing. After this affected leg is appropriately placed on the step, advance the stronger leg down to the same step that the weaker leg is on. If there is no rail to hold on to, the cane is placed on the lower step at the same time or after placement of the weaker leg. That way, your cane is there for support while your stronger leg is being lowered down.

Willemina:
