'Mijn onderzoek draait om thema’s als bewustwording van specifieke fenomenen zoals emotionele impact op elkaar, autismespectrum stoornissen, intermenselijke communicatie, emotionele en sociale wederkerigheid, het IK als besturingsinstrument van de mens en wezenlijk contact.'

Now I think I know what she means, just can't think of a clever way of putting it in English. And suggestions would be welcome. The text is a university paper on Steiner education/philosophy about Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) and how they relate to primary education stuff.

I see that everyone is agreeing with "fundamental human contact". I would like to point out that Rudolf Steiner's (or Waldorf) philosophy is particular, as is its terminology. There are no refs to be found for "fundamental human contact" in this context.

I think that the rather nebulous concept 'wezenlijk contact' can be translated in many different ways. 'Fundamental human contact' seems to be one possibility, but there are many others, such as 'real contact', 'substantial contact', 'actual contact', or even 'radical contact', 'positive contact' or 'material contact'. However, 'vital contact' gets more hits in Steiner/Waldorf related literature and so I am going to go with this option in my text.

Explanation:
wezenlijk means not only essential, but also 'eigen aan het wezen van iemand of iets', so essentially, the author of this piece is not only saying it is fundamental, human-to-human contact, but also that it is man's own way of interacting with each other.

Or that is how I would understand it.

'Fundamental human contact' seems to be one possibility, but there are many others, such as 'real contact', 'substantial contact', 'actual contact', or even 'radical contact', 'positive contact' or 'material contact'.
