Thanks!

abstract thinking/abstraction
Explanation:
Not really sure, but what is meant here is that thinking 'overstijgt' (goes beyond) what the word says. Abstract thinking is a term for generalisation and is used also in psychology.

Overstijgend denken seems to me not identical, but descriptive/specifying for abstract thinking and is not a commonly used formulation. Thanks to everybody who contributed to the discussion!

out-of-the-box thinking

Explanation:
This is the most usual term (more than 400.000 hits om UK Google), although this is used most frequently in a business context. It is possible that there is a special term used in psychology.

That it occurs twice in the sentence is a matter of poor sentence construction if not poor thinking.

agree  Verginia Ophof: transcending thought ?

disagree  Lianne van de Ven: "Overstijgend" or abstract thinking would be a requirement for independent thinking, but it's not identical. See references.

neutral  Barend van Zadelhoff: 'lateral (transformational)' is the opposite of 'vertical (evolutionary) thinking, 'lateral thinking' is a concept introduced by Edward de Bono. I don't understand why you mention it in this context.

cross-disciplinary thinking (thinking beyond limitations)

Explanation:
General factual knowledge and practical reasoning within a situational context are weak, but summarization skills (remembering and processing that which has been formulated in its entirety), vocabulary and abstract-like reasoning (cross-disciplinary thinking) are even more weakly developed.

Explanation:
