Twee benamingen worden gebruikt: Kringloopwinkel (voornamelijk in Nederland) en Kringwinkel (voornamelijk in Vlaanderen).

Dit is een winkel waar aan lage prijzen herbruikbare spullen (kleding, electrische toestellen, meubelen, huisraad, ...) worden aangeboden aan het grote publiek, maar in hoofdzaak bedoeld voor financieel zwakkeren (leefloners, werklozen, azielzoekers, steuntrekkers, ...). Het personeel is ten dele afkomstig uit diezelfde kringen: personen die langdurig werlooos waren en nu opnieuw hun eerste stappen zetten op de arbeidsmarkt, (zeer) licht mentaal/fysiek gehandicapten, laag- of ongeschoolden, anderstaligen, kandidaat vluchtelingen, ... De spullen die verkocht worden, zijn afkomstig uit recyclage (o.a. uit de terugnameplicht van sommige productgroepen) of worden gratis aangebracht.

Ik vond reeds "charity shop", maar ik vind dit een licht denigrerende bijklank hebben (hoewel de vlag eigenlijk wel de lading dekt!), second hand shop (maar daar lijkt me het sociaal aspect van tewerkstelling en klanrengroep te weinig betrokken, evenals het gratis aanleveren/recyclerend aanleveren van de te verkopen spullen), thrift shop.

Hoe noem ik dit best in het Engels?

I think "thrift shop" fits best for my target audience, even though I also like "goodwill store". I choose not to use "charity shop" because I feel it has a a negative connotation both other translations don't have.

agree  Suzan Hamer: Yes; sometimes such shops are generically referred to as "Goodwill" or "Salvation Army" (stores). // Right but, as Casey says, people will say Goodwill, for example, when referring to any thrift shop or 1 run by another organization.

neutral  Sally Hill (X): As far as I know, in the UK neither 'thrift store' nor 'goodwill store' are used. I myself (a Brit) would refer to charity shop or second-hand shop. The correct translation will surely depend on your target audience.

Goodwill store


Explanation:
From personal experience in the US: we always talked about taking things we wanted to get rid of (but didn't want to throw out) to the goodwill store. Other terms generally used are the thrift store or charity shop.

agree  PeterinScotland: We do have community enterprises like these in UK, but they are not a uniform thing. Here in the north of Scotland we have ILM (Highland) which refurbishes and sells household appliances (white goods) and provides a handyperson service to old people.
